Metarhizium, green muscle, locusts

Green Muscle was extensively tested through the course of its development during the LUBILOSA collaboration and there is a large amount of scientific literature, which includes tests on non-target organisms. External researchers found no adverse effects on non-target populations when independently assessed in field trials. No effects would be expected at the doses recommended for effective locust control.

Green Muscle also underwent, and passed, mammalian safety testing. It is true to say that Green Muscle is significantly and measurably safer than the chemical insecticides currently used to control locusts. It is effective in providing more persistent pest control than the chemicals that can be used.

As to allergies, Metarhizium is naturally occurring and we all breathe it in during our normal lives, as the spores are part of normal air-flora. The amounts applied are a small increment on what is naturally around so there should be no problems during field use. The area to take precautions is in the manufacture when large quantities of these small spores are around in powder form. Any air-borne particles are a hazard however conventional containment (properly applied) and the correct use of personal safety equipment will ensure total safety during the processes of manufacture. At application Green Muscle is in a liquid form, usually an oil formulation.

The basic message is that Green Muscle is much safer and more effective than chemicals. The same is true for Greenguard, developed with the benefit of scientific advances from the LUBILOSA project and project scientists. Green Muscle has also been used in West Africa against locust.
