Pests Pests Entities Weeds Indigofera hirsuta, identification, Palau

Indigofera hirsuta

July 2007. The weed, from Palau, was tentatively identified as Indigofera hirsuta, hairy indigo. This is a new record for Palau and confirmation was needed. The individual flowers in the inflorescence are about 2 mm long. The plant is a small shrub, perhaps 1 m tall. The stems are densely covered in rust-colored hairs – difficult to see in the photos.

There are a number of accounts of this weed on the HEAR website;

It was confirmed as Indigofera hirsuta, hairy indigo. The characteristics are the hairiness and purplish brown stems. The weed has been reported as an Australian native, and common weed in drier area of North Queensland. It is a good host for silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Biotype B).

A second photo was provided (taken in North Queensland) for comparison.
