Members thought that it is secondary infection by Colletotrichum, from wounds caused by birds/bats. The girdling on trunk seems unrelated to the symptoms on the fruit. Slugs and/or snails could cause the wounds, as papaya is a favourite amongst many crops. The damage seems to have occurred earlier, when the plants were smaller.
