Nipaecoccus nipae, mealybug, guava, Kosrae, FSM

August 2012. A mealybug from guava from Kosrae, FSM, and also said to be on chilli pepper and tomato plants.

A member wrote that from the shape and colour it could be the coconut mealybug, Nipaecoccus nipae. This mealybug has been recorded on Kosrae in past surveys. It is known to be present in the Philippines and Hawaii. It is unusual for a mealybug because the wax is usually either buff-coloured or yellowish, and forms little cushions on the dorsal surface. The white wax bits in the colony are the male cocoons (see photos).
