How to control stink bugs, litchi, India

April 2012. A message from a member of ICAR, Ranchi, India enquiring how to control stink bugs in litchi. The stink bug Tessaratoma papillosa. The crop has been severely damaged.

It woud be worthwhile investigating the parasitic wasp, Anastatus japonicus, which can be reared on eggs of Antheraea pernyi and released into the lychee orchards; it is a parasite on the eggs of T. papillosa,

A Pestnet moderator wrote about his problems witht the Bronze orange stick bug on citrues, which has proved impossible to control except with pesticides. He wrote:

The =Brobnze oragne stick bug in citrus causes symptoms very similar to those illustrated. The bugs are tough and distasteful, even the mynahs refuse to eat them. Other people have the same problem: http://forums.naturalparenting.com.au/yard-garden/27852-how-get-rid-citrus-stink-bugs.html

A vacuum cleaner has nnot been tried(!) as this article suggests (http://aussieorganicgardening.com/?p=607), but knocking them off the citrus with a broom was effective but tiring. Next pest oil was tried, then pyrethrum, and finally pyrethroid. That worked.

The method to use depends on the number of trees, and in the case of the litchi problem that was not stated.
