?Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

December 2002. In a message from Marshall Islands, papaya fruit have been found rotting from the top, attached to the trunk. It was thought to be anthracnose, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Later, other photos were sent of the same problem.

There were not suggestions as to the cause of the problem, but ripe fruit such as those in the photo are likely to become infected by C. gloeosporioides, especially if they are wounded by insects or soem mechanical means.
