Scale insect, Capsicum frutescens, Guam

May 2011. A scale insect on Capsicum frutescens was sent for identification.

Later (July), the following response was received from Gillian Watson, California Department of Food and Agriculture:

“As always, authoritative identification of any sort of scale insect would require examination of slide-mounted specimens.

“It???s a species of Pulvinaria (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccoidea: Coccidae). A common species in parts of the Pacific, which I have seen infesting Capsicum annuum, is Pulvinaria urbicola. According to ScaleNet there are no literature records of any Pulvinaria from Guam, so possibly this may be a new introduction there.”
