Cooking oil for corn ear worm control, Mexico

October 2017. An entry of the Plantwise blog on the use of cooking oil to control corn ear worm in Mexico stimulated discussion. it is applied to the cobs at about 2-3 litres per 1000m2. And that takes about a day to apply.

There were questions and comments:

1. How is the oil applied: by hand or by sprayer? Probably by hand.
2. It was tried previously on Rota, CMNI, and one much be careful. Vegetable oil will coat the husk and kill the cob if too much is applied. Also, a previous recommendation was to use MINERAL oil, just a drop on the silk of each cob. The writer tried vegetable oil and made some mistakes (presumably, meaning phytotoxicity occurred, so beware).
3. Treat a few cobs and see how it goes.
