Sphaerotrypes, Vietnam

October 2007. A beetle has been found attacking the tree, Hopea (Family: Dipterocarpaceae; Order: Malvales) in the south of Vietnam (Ba ria – Vung Tau province).

The beetle in the photos belongs to the Genus Sphaerotrypes (bark beetles, Scolytidae or Scolytinae). There is only one species known from Vietnam, S globulus Blandford, which was registered from Castanopsis. On Hopea, other species are S brevisetosus Browne, S carinatus Eggers, S minutus Browne, S philippinensis Strohmeyer, S subtectus Browne, but these were not collected in Vietnam, but in other regions, for example, Burma, India, Philippine Islands, Malaysia and Indonesia.
