Pests Pests Entities Insects Moths & butterflies Hydriris (Antiercta) sp., Ipomoea sp., Maldives

Hydrirus (Antiercta) sp.

May 2007. The caterpillar was collected from kangkong, Ipomoea aquatica, a leafy green vegetable, in Maldives.

It was thought to be an Antiercta species. Antiercta ornatlis is now Hydriris ornatalis. There are good photos on the Internet.

Most taxonomists now place this in Crambidae, Spilomelinae. H ornatalis is a common species in Hong Kong, though as it is not listed in the local checklist of agricultural insects (Lee & Winney, 1982), it is assumed that it normally does not cause significant damage; though that may not be the case elsewhere in the world.
