Macroglossum hirundo

March 2022. A request from Palau for the likely identification of a hornworm on Morinda citrifolia. Several suggestions were given: Gnathothlibus (=Chromis) erotus and Cephonodes; and (in Thailand), Hippotion velox and Macroglossum sitiene. Macroglossum sp. was also reported from Rubiaceae in Indonesia and it was parasitized by the tachinid, Carcelia iridipennis (Wulp) (=modicella). It is likely that the Palau insect is one of these sphingids.

But then when the photos were finally attached it was identified as Macroglossum hirundo, but the subspecies is more difficult. It could be ssp. cinerascens Butler from Caroline Islands.

Another suggestion came from Thailand: Macroglossum sylvia, a species which also occurs from Ceylon to Sundaland, Sulawesi, the Philippines and Taiwan.

The insect was used as an example of the workings of Ecoport: See Pest taxonomy/IDs: Ecoport.
