Fimbristylis cymosa, Samoa

October 2008. Samoa asked what was this plant found on a golf course. It appears to be displacing Bermuda grass. The plants are small and grow appressed to the soil surface; roots of freshly uprooted plants have a ‘nutgrass small; but there are no ‘nuts’ on the plants; leaves are quite still and would be slighly uncomfortable to walk on with bare feet.

It was thought to be Fimbristylis cymosa (button sedge). The inflorescence is 2-3 times longer than the leaf blades. It is often found in sandy soils near coastal flats throughout the Pacific.
