Flemingia macrophylla, FSM

March 2009. The plant in the photo grows up to 2.5 m tall, and has many black seeds. It was photographed in Pohnpei. What is it?

It was said to be a member of the legume family, and that USDAA NRCS and PNI Forestry were once using it as hedgerows in demonstration sites with sakau (kava). It was identified as Flemingia macrophylla, which is on the PIER list. It is also in Samoa, on Savaii, but not common.

It was trialled in Vanuatu in alleys for variouos crops, coffee and others; the alleys formed an impressive mat of leaves [Editor].
