Mucuna gigantea, Mokil, FSM

June 2012. A fast-growing invasive vine was found on the outer island of Mokil, FSM. It was smothering other plants and is very aggressive. Can anyone help in the identification?

It was identified as Mucuna gigantea or a close relative. The vine does have compound leaves, but a couple of the leaflets have fallen off. This species is most likely native to the island. Mucunagiganteaseeds are adapted for sea dispersal.

A good photo of flowers and fruit of M. gigantea for ID confirmation are found inhttp://cookislands.bishopmuseum.org/species.asp?id=6409.
