Pittosporum undulatum

October 2004. The weed from Maui, Hawaii, has been tentatively identified as Pittosporum undulatum. There are very few trees on the island and the Pittosporum are beginning to spread. The Department of Agriculture has expressed interest in getting a confirmation on the ID of this species. Other photos can be seen at: http://www.hear.org/starr/hiplants/images/thumbnails/html/pittosporum_undulatum.htm.

It was confirmed as Pittosporum undulatum. The small cream-coloured fragrant flowers appear in spring in clusters at the tip of current year growth. It’s a medium-sized rainforest tree from SE Australia. It is a problem in the higher rainfall areas of South Australia where it is not indigenous: it displaces native vegetation and because of its greater resistance to fire it changes the fire intensity and has an impact on the subsequent regeneration.
