Mites, onion, Vietnam

December 2009. Vietnam sent photos of mites found on harvested onions and garlic in Quang Ninh province.

The dark one (left) is an oribatid (beetle mite; soil mites feeding on fungi mainly; they are not plant pests); these mites need to be dissected and mounted on slides for proper ids.

The oval flat one (right) is an acarid hypopus (deutonymph stage for dispersal; non-feeding). Slide-mounted specimens are needed for id, in general.
