?Chironomus

March 2005. A request of the identification of this Dipteran species, from Australia. The flies breeds in very high numbers (over 1000 in m2 area), and mostly seen under shade areas or in grassy vegetation. The land holder spraying with insecticides 2-3 times/ weeks, but was unable to control them. There are two different types in the sample, possibily male and female flies. Appearance quite similar to a mosquito, but they do not bite.

It is likey to be a Chironomus species.
