November 2006. The mango season in Palau has been devastated by what was thought to be the Mango leafhopper. Confirmation was requested.
There is a good photo of Idioscopus nitdulus and some general information at www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/health/4275.html, Office of Biosecurity, Government of Queensland. A second species, I clypealis, also has the same common name. The two species can also be seen illustrated on the CSIRO Entomology website at:
http://www.ento.csiro.au/aicn//name_c/a_2561.htm http://www.ento.csiro.au/aicn//name_c/a_2562.htm
The recommended control in India is:
Spray two rounds of one of the following: acephate75 SP @ 1 gm/litre; phosalone 35EC @ 1.5 ml/litre; carbaryl 50WP 2 gm/litre; phosphamidon 40SL 2 ml/litre of water. The first spray should be at the time of panicle emergence and the second 2 weeks later. Wettable sulphur @ 2 gm/litre may be sprayed after spraying carbaryl to avoid mite resurgence. |
