November 2001. The Head of the Diagnostic and Advisory Services at CABI has provided the following, which describes the assistance that individuals and countries might obtain from the Global Plant Clinic in the identification of potential pathogens.
CABI Bioscience receives financial assistance from DFID (UK) to provide a free technical and advisory service for plant health. The service is part of DFID’s strategy to help alleviate poverty and develop sustainable livelihoods in developing countries. The diagnostic facility and advice on plant diseases and their management aims to help people and organisations working for the benefit of smallholders. The service is not just for scientists: it encourages NGOs, farmer organisations and others working directly with farmers to get in touch.
The free service is aimed at countries where the British aid programme is working with national governments to improve plant production, both through bilateral and multilateral channels (e.g. EU).
We accept diseased material for diagnostic investigations and cultures of potential pathogens for identification. Photographs are especially welcome, either as prints or in digital form. Please contact us first before sending material so that we can discuss the best way to proceed.
