Ecoport

March 2002. The functions of Ecoport were demonstrated using hawkmoths (Macroglossum hirundo on Morinda citrifolia) as an example:

Concerning hawkmoths/hornworms feeding on the “Kura tree” (Morinda citrifolia): there are two species reported from Fiji:

  • Chromis erotus (synonym: Gnathothlibus erotus ssp. eras) and
  • Macroglossum hirundo ssp. vitiensis

M. hirundo is similar to the image sent from Palau.

There is a beautiful stamp-issue featuring six of Fiji’s most common hawkmoths (10 reported in Fiji). All have been entered into EcoPort now – have a look:

The photos of the Macroglossum hirundo submitted to PestNet have been uploaded with the information that came with them: <http://www.ecoport.org/EP.exe$PictShow?ID=23399> and <http://www.ecoport.org/EP.exe$PictShow?ID=23400> .

A bit of information has been quickly added to some hawkmoths: type either “hawkmoth” or the acc. scientific name in the “search for entity” box in order to view the record site (if pictures are available, the
“P” in the top-bar will take you there…). Type “get full record” to view all presently available information;
see for example the following direct links:

Important pests/diseases are listed for each plant/crop-record under the “Pest Note” field of the category “crop” (in each plant-entity, click on “crop” under the category-field, go to “notes” or look at “get full
category” … (direct link to the record of Morinda citrifolia (‘Kura’ tree): http://www.ecoport.org/ep.exe$EntPage?ID=1488).
