Asparagus (?)anthracnose, Sri Lanka

January 2013. A severe outbreak of a diseases was recently observed on commercial asparagus in Sri Lanka. Lesions are large oval and spreading with large numbers of fungal fruiting bodies (photo, left). Pink fungal spores masses are seen in the lesions. It is most likely that the disease is that of anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Editor). In Australia, the disease is known, but only found under hot, humid conditions in northern Australia where is can cause crop failure.
