Chafer beetle, coconuts, Vanuatu

January 2005. In Vanuatu, a beetle is said to be damaging young coconut fruits. Its identification was requested and and also a method for its control. The beetle is 2???3 cm long with yellowish color and black bands on the dorsal side. As shown in the photo, the adult beetles eats the young coconut fruits and they fall off. Farmers in Vanuatu do not recognise it and it has been reported to the quarantine department.

It is a chafer beetle (Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae). It is named in the Landcare, New Zealand collection. Generally, the larvae feed in dead wood, etc.; the adults may feed on flowers (or pollen).
