Tenebrionid, Vanuatu

October 2010. A Tenebriond from Vanuatu for identification.

Members needed more information where the insect was found. Some references were provided:

Zoltan Kaszab has published on the Tenebrionidae of Samoa (http://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10125/14865) and Fiji (http://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10125/14856). These papers are in German. No problem if you know the language, but if not, the text can be copied and pasted into Google Translate (http://translate.google.com). There are several pictures, which helps too.

It was said that the tenebrionid looks similar to Gonocephalum spp. of southern Africa in terms of shape and colouring. Here they are about 10 mm long and wander around on the ground; they can be damaging as they eat the seed of newly planted crops at certain times of the year.
