Thyas miniacea

May 2001. A moth caught in Palau, at first thought to be the fruit- piercing moth, Eudocima fullonia. Later, it was identified as Thyas miniacea. It is about the same size as E fullonia. There are several described subspecies. This species and Achaea are secondary “suckers” on soft, over-ripe or damaged fruit and do not have the capability (proboscis) of piercing hard fruit. Palau does have some unusual, possibly endemic species of Eudocima, as well as common E fullonia and several others.
