Scrub mites (chiggers), Caribbean

January 2009. A question from the CABI Caribbean and Latin America office for information on eliminating chiggers (also called scrub mites, harvest mites, or bête rouge in the Caribbean, an arachnid of the suborder Prostigmata, from infested land by means other than burning the grasses and shrubs, and other environmentally damaging methods.

It was said that these mites are hard to control, and other than flooding the land, or applying miticides. Perhaps an application of soap solution (600 litre/ha) might be worth considering. One member said that Guinea fowl had been used to control leeches, ticks and chiggers satisfactorily, and suggested that the Environmental Department at the Naval Air Engineering Station, Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA, be contacted.
