Araneid spp., spiders, Guam

July 2010. Guam reported the interception of a ship from South Korea infested with spiders. The ship was delivering housing units and accessories for a work force village expected to house up to 18,000 temporary workers. The ship was turned away from Guam’s seaport in Apra Harbor last week when it was discovered that the ship and its cargo was infested with thousands of spiders that were identified as two Araneid species: Araneus ventricosus and Larinioides cornutus by Dr. Seung Tae Kim, an arachnologist at the Seoul National University.
