Borreria (Spermacoce) latifolia

June 2003. A request from Fiji for information on the chemical control of Borreria (Spermacoce) latifolia.

In response, it was said that the weed was resistant to Paraquat. It was also said that it succumbs well to glyphosate (Round-up). The ideal time of spraying is when the weeds are about 15 cm tall, and obviously before flowering. Glyphosate needs to be applied on a sunny day when there is at least half a day of sunshine assured after the spray. Adding nitrogen, 0.5 to 1% on volume of spray, in the form of urea or ammonium sulphate, into the spray tank, enhances the faster uptake of glyphosate.
