Subject tagging

When PestNet users, whether growers, advisors or pest specialists, make submissions and responses to PestNet, they can give guidance to other users about the main features of the posting by adding tags. This can include such details as the type of crop afffected, the category of pest, such as insect, disease, weed, or possibly damage symptoms, the country, etc.). This  process is similar to hash tagging in Twitter or Facebook and integrates naturally as a part of the Submission text. Users can create any tags they wish. For example, “#corn”, “#insect-damage”. A user can also reference other users via the @tag, e.g., @Grahame. It is also possible to reference known fact sheets using the plus symbol, e.g., +armyworms.

Users do not need to remember hash tags, usernames or fact sheet tags. Once they type the #, @ or +, the app automatically returns a list of matching results as they type. Tags are clickable and allow the user to then filter the view of submissions to only those associated with the tag(s) selected. Tags can also be used in the user’s notification service.  Users can select tags reflecting their interests, along with tags for specific users or specific submissions. When activity occurs with these selected tags the user is automatically notified within the app.
