Ficus citrifolia, holes

July 2012. Does anyone know what could have caused these holes in leaves of Ficus citrifolia, next to a beach on Pigeon Point? The disorder might well be abiotic. All leaves of this tree, except the youngest ones, were severely perforated, with no visible gradient. The younger leaves were quite gall-infested, but the respective spacial patterns suggest no connection between the two symptoms. Meteorological conditions were pretty typical for July, although a few hot days preceded our Pigeon Island visit.

There was no response.
