Melampodium divaricatum; it is invasive, Palau

May 2015. A single plant was found in a garden in Palau, and the sender wanted to know what it was and if it was invasive. The plant is about 40 cm tall, and the flowers are about 2 cm in diameter.

It was said to be Melampodium divaricatum (Rich. Ex Pers.) DC and is known by various common names such as butter daisy, little yellow star, million gold, etc. It is similar to Melampodium paludosum HBK. The difference is M. divaricatum has 9 petals while M. paludosum has more than 9 petals. Both are also similar to creeping Wedelia trilobata or Singapore daisy and are used as ornamentals.
