Weeds, Portulaca & Melampodium, PNG

August 2014. Two weeds from PNG.

They were identified as Portulaca – probably one of the cultivated Portulaca species that is known and sold as ‘Portulaca sun jewels’. The yellow-flowered daisy may be a species of Melampodium, and looks rather like Melampodium divaricatumor ‘butter daisy’ which I have collected on two occasions. This species is considered to be ‘doubtfully naturalised’ at one site in far north Queensland.

In El Salvador, Melampodium divaricatum, is a weed that is fed to pigs and cattle.
